Orphanage history
The Home of Hope is an independent local initiative founded by Rev Thomson Chipeta, a retired church minister. Remembering what it had been like to lose his own parents whilst still young, he began taking orphans into his home in 1992. In 1997 the local Presbyterian Church donated 40 acres of land to build a permanent home for these children. Construction began in 1998 and as the walls went up so the number of children increased!
By 2007 there are six large residential houses, a dining/assembly hall, a clinic, classrooms for nursery, primary and secondary classes, and staff housing. Owing to the orphan crisis in the country, the Home receives no long-term funding from the government. A variety of individuals and groups have kept the orphanage going over the years. Regular sponsors and donors are needed to ensure sustainability
